Elgin, Union County’s northernmost city, is nestled against the Wallowa Mountains on the banks of the Grande Ronde River. The hillsides surrounding the small town are covered with mature forests that once sheltered Chief Joseph's, giving this area the name of "Indian Valley" due to its history of tribal Indians who once used this area to meet and trade goods.
Since its days as a trade post, dating back to 1882, Elgin has depended primarily on logging, agriculture and cattle ranches as the mainstays of its economy. Both residents and visitors are spoiled by the abundance of recreational activities the area has to offer, including hunting, fishing, skiing, camping and white water rafting. Elgin is also home to the Elgin Opera House, a beautiful facility built in 1911, which now provides movies, plays, concerts and lectures to residents and visitors.
An active downtown district, an entrepreneurial spirit, a number of cottage businesses and a newly opened industrial park and RV camp ground with a boat ramp are now helping to diversify and sustain the economy.
Elgin also serves as the gateway to Wallowa County.
